Smooth PDO Threads For Facial Rejuvenation
When used aesthetically, PDO smooth threads can help tighten and smooth the skin by boosting collagen production and rejuvenating the skin of your face and neck. PDO smooth threads are dissolvable sutures that are extremely thin (the size of a strand of hair) and made of a neutral substance that’s very inert to our bodies. It’s the same material used for stitching wounds for decades. When it was noted that skin texture, collagen, and firmness improved after a sutured cut had healed, the novel idea was to load this suture thread onto a needle to help place it under the skin, specifically for skin improvement. This procedure worked so well that PDO threads are used routinely in facial and skin rejuvenation around the world.
Types Of PDO Threads
Different types of PDO threads are now available on the market. The most popular types are molded, barbed, smooth, and twist threads. Smooth threads are the original thread utilized and continue to increase collagen production over the six months of absorption after they are administered. Twist threads are similar to smooth, except they have a spiral shape that fits more thread into a smaller area, making it more condensed. Barbed and molded are comparable but have tiny barbs that can pierce into the skin that lift and hold the skin up when inserted. For more information about barbed threads, click here. Common areas where smooth threads are used include the lip, neck, marionette, and lower cheek lines.

Smooth PDO Threads Benefits
The benefits of smooth threads are the skin enhancement and rejuvenation results that can be achieved with this treatment. However, patience is required when being treated with smooth PDO threads. The aesthetic results are gradual and become noticeable in about four weeks. The aesthetic results then continue to improve for the life of the threads, which is six months and lasts up to two years. Other benefits of smooth threads include the following:
- minimally invasive
- lowered financial cost compared to other aesthetic options
- easy way to slow down skin’s aging process or reverse some signs of aging, making the skin look firmer and more youthful
Smooth PDO Threads Cost
The cost of smooth threads depends on how many threads are requested or needed to treat the desired area. Marielaina Perrone, DDS, will be able to assess with you during your initial aesthetic consultation and determine how many threads are recommended to achieve your desired results. Dr. Perrone will discuss the financial costs with you at that time, so you are educated on all factors of the procedure.
Smooth PDO Threads Procedure
Before & Preparation
Before treatment with PDO smooth threads, there are several things to avoid, including blood-thinning medications such as Advil, Aleve, ibuprofen, or Aspirin. Patients about to be treated with PDO smooth threads should also avoid herbal supplements such as St. John’s Wort, Omega 3s, and Ginko Balboa. It would be best to refrain from drinking alcohol for a few days before your smooth PDO thread appointment. Certain things that are encouraged include taking Arnica pills and eating pineapple. Both help reduces the risk of swelling and bruising. Be sure to arrive for your appointment with a clean face and free of makeup.
During the Smooth PDO Thread Procedure
Upon arrival, you will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire about your medical history and include any allergies. Then you will sit comfortably as Dr. Perrone discusses the procedure and administers a local anesthetic to the treatment area. The process itself takes between ten to fifteen minutes.
Aftercare & Recovery
Because smooth PDO threads are not pulling on your skin like barbed threads do, there are no exercise activity restrictions following treatment. However, minimal movement of the treatment area is recommended to reduce the risk of expulsion. For example, if lip lines are treated, it’s best to keep smiling or pursing lips to an absolute minimum.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Anyone looking to increase their skin’s firmness and collagen content as a treatment or preventatively to slow the aging process is an ideal candidate for treatment with smooth PDO threads. However, when a significant amount of skin is sagging, other aesthetic treatments may be recommended as a combination treatment to ensure good aesthetic results.
Side Effects & Risks
Side effects and risks associated with smooth PDO threads are minimal compared to barbed threads. As with most cosmetic injections, the risk of bruising is the most common side effect. Pain or discomfort, if present, is usually relatively minimal. Temporary nerve irritation is possible but typically minimal and lasts only about two weeks. Thread extrusion is possible, but minimizing animation can reduce the risk. If a thread is expelled, however, there’s usually no sequela. If you have questions or concerns following your aesthetic treatment, contact our office immediately to schedule a follow-up visit.
Due to Dr. Perrone’s training and experience, the risks are minimized but still possible. Every patient reacts differently to different treatments, and patients should be educated on potential issues that may occur before treatment begins.
