Myths And Facts About Porcelain Veneers

Las Vegas Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are a common cosmetic dentistry procedure which can enhance any smile. There are many misconceptions about porcelain veneers regarding esthetics and function. Below are a few of them and the actual facts regarding this cosmetic treatment.

MYTH #1: Porcelain Veneers Tend To Look Fake

In the early days of porcelain veneers, they tended to look very fake. This is because the technology and dental materials had not matured to allow them to look natural. The goal was an esthetic improvement but the end result were too big or too thick, or even too white. They made the smile appear very fake and not natural. In modern cosmetic dentistry, dental porcelain has evolved to be stronger and far more esthetic.

A well trained, experienced cosmetic dentist can make a porcelain veneer match exactly to the natural teeth surrounding the veneer. This dentist will also use “smile design” to customize the shape, length, color, and translucency of the veneer to make it so only you and the dentist know it is not your real tooth facing. No 2 smiles are alike, so too are no 2 porcelain veneer cases.

Dr Perrone with her years of training and experience spends time before treatment to discuss with each patient what their goals are for their smile. Some goals may be unreasonable while others are very obtainable. Dr Perrone can even add imperfections to a veneer if a patient so chooses to match the rest of your smile.

MYTH #2: Anyone Can Get Porcelain Veneers

While porcelain veneers are very popular among celebrities and every day people they are not for everyone. First and foremost, your dental health must be a priority. Placing porcelain veneers over a teeth that are poorly maintained is a recipe for veneer failure down the road. If there is extensive tooth decay a porcelain crown may be the better cosmetic option.

Dr Perrone will carefully examine your teeth and gums to ensure the foundation for your new veneers is healthy. If she finds anything out of the ordinary she will inform you and proceed to explain options if veneers are not right for you.

MYTH #3: Porcelain Veneers Easily Stain

Our teeth are porous which allows for staining to occur. Dental porcelain is not. Therefore porcelain veneers will not stain over time. Teeth whitening will only work as well as you maintain it. This means foregoing coffee, teas, and wine which will stain your teeth over time. Porcelain veneers will not stain guaranteed.

Dental porcelain is also extremely strong, high amount of translucency, and durable. Porcelain veneers are a long lasting, time tested, and beautifully natural dental treatment.

MYTH #4: Porcelain Veneers Only Work On Front Teeth

While this is the most common area for placement, they can be used in the back of the mouth as well. If a patient is looking for a complete smile makeover, Dr Perrone will often extend the veneers into the premolar area. This is is especially preferable for patients who have a “BIG” smile. The total number of veneers will be something you discuss with Dr Perrone prior to beginning treatment. Again it is highly individualized for each patient.

MYTH #5: Veneers Need Teeth To Be Shaved Down

The reality is a veneer is a thin finger nail like appliance. It is merely a shell that covers the exterior of your tooth. Very little natural tooth structure is actually removed. In some cases, no preparation is even needed. Again depends on the individual and the smile they are trying to achieve.

MYTH #6: Veneers Will Weaken My Teeth

Simply not true. Veneers actually add a layer of protection to our teeth like a shield. They can protect our enamel from becoming sensitive to hot or cold. Porcelain is extremely strong and durable and will only enhance the strength of your smile and not weaken it.
