Facts About Cinco De Mayo Day
-National Holiday in Mexico
-Often confused with Mexican Independence Day. That holiday is celebrated on September 16th.
-It commemorates the Mexican victory over the French at the battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The victory was an important step towards independence for Mexico.
-The Battle of Puebla was a major victory for the Mexican people as only 4,000 Mexican soldiers battled and defeated 6,500 French soldiers. The entire war took 6 more years to finish. The victory at Puebla was a huge battle for the Mexican people to believe independence was possible.
-The holiday became extremely popular by Mexican groups in the USA during the 1960’s and 1970’s.
-The very first Cinco de Mayo celebration occurred in southern California in 1863.
-Major cities all over the US and Mexico have celebrations for cinco de mayo, some drawing as many as 500,00 people. Los Angeles has the largest celebration of all which they call Fiesta Broadway.
-The biggest Cinco de Mayo celebration is held in Puebla, Mexico.
