Most people would love a bright, white smile. A smile is one of the first things people notice when they meet or greet us. Did you know there are ways you can achieve this at home during your regular schedule as well as with some help from your dentist?

A smile that is dull and lifeless tends to make us feel less confident about ourselves and in turn makes us look older than we really are to people we meet. Whereas a bright shiny sparkle, gives people a self confidence boost as well as change how people look at them. Studies have shown people with whiter, brighter smiles are almost always percieved by others to be younger than they really are.

Luckily, there are some ways to maintain a white bright smile both on our own as well as with help from your dentist.

Top Tips for a Whiter, Brighter Smile

-Focus on Maintaining Proper Oral Hygiene. It is amazing how little time it takes in our day to keep our teeth brushed, flossed, and rinsed and still many of us do not find the time to do it right. Brushing at least twice a day is recommended (but brushing after every meal is even better!), flossing at least once a day and rinsing with an antibacterial or fluoride rinse. Flossing reaches areas even the best brushers and rinsing cannot ever dare to reach. If a build up of plaque is allowed to go unchecked it will make it easier for stains from foods, red wines, or tobacco to accumulate. A great product to try is Periogen, it removes stains, tartar, and plaque between dental cleanings.

-Keep Away From the Enemy. Avoid or minimize the intake of sugary drinks and foods, especially sticky candies (like gummy bears or fruit roll-ups). Acidic foods (like citrus juices) may appear healthy but are not very good for maintaining a neutral balance in your mouth or for your teeth. High intake of sugar and acids, and repetitive intake of them, can weaken tooth enamel and create an environment for cavity causing bacteria to grow and thrive. This can eventually result in enamel wear, tooth decay and discoloration on the teeth.

There are many foods and drinks that are known to stain teeth. These include red wine, coffee, tea, and sodas. A big no-no if you want to keep your teeth white and bright, is tobacco use. Smoking will yellow your teeth and age you very quickly.

-Change your Diet. Maintaining a healthy mouth is directly connected with keeping your smile as bright and white as possible. You need to start with a balanced diet with certain nutrients to help keep away oral health problems that can take away from a beautiful smile. These problems include, tooth cavities, tooth erosion, and periodontal disease. Some of the best foods for teeth and mouth are foods high in calcium and low in fat. These include milk, cheeses, cruciferous vegetables (these are mainly green leafy vegetables like broccoli), or soy products.

Vitamin C is another very important nutrient that helps maintain strong teeth by working as an antioxidant to repair tissue and prevent disease-causing bacteria from penetrating the gums. The cruciferous veggies (particularly broccoli) will do a double job, since they are rich in both calcium and vitamin C.

Any crunchy fruits and veggies, like apples and carrots, are also good for your teeth. This is because chewing them will increase salivary production which can help protect the teeth from plaque-causing bacteria by breaking down food caught between teeth and rinsing the mouth by neutralizing bad acids.

Drinking lots of water also helps rid your mouth of such bacteria (especially after meals) while also helping to prevent stains and protect your teeth from the harmful effects of acidic foods and beverages. Chewing sugarless gum is another easy way to increase salivary production. The saliva is a natural way to fight acid and keep your teeth looking bright and white.

-Use Makeup to your Advantage. This is mainly for the women but choosing the right shades of makeup can make a big difference to how your teeth look to others.

1) Choose a Color that Contrasts with natural tones.  A punch of red or pink tone on your cheeks and lips stands out from your dazzling smile while beige or orangey shades blend into discolored teeth. Bright orange and yellow toned reds, actually emphasize the yellow tones that can be in your teeth.

2) Choose lipsticks with blue undertone shades (bright pinks and reds). They pick up the reflective edging on your teeth making your smile appear whiter.

3) Experiment with bronzing. Darker complexions can offset white teeth. Sweep bronzer over the high points of your face. These areas include the hairline, bridge of your nose, cheek bones and tip of your chin. Your teeth will receive an instant benefit and appear whiter.

4) Sparkle it up!. Dab an opalescent illuminator on the Cupid’s bow of your mouth. This allows the white luminescence to pick up reflection off your teeth.

5) Save the gold tones for your eyelids and avoid gold tones near your lips or teeth. The shine from gold too closely resembles yellow. This will accentuate stains and make teeth appear darker yellow.

-Teeth Whitening for a Whiter, Brighter Smile. Teeth whitening can be done a few ways. These can include Do It Yourself (DIY) teeth whitening or in office professional teeth whitening.

1) DIY Teeth Whitening. This is a more inexpensive method but can be very effective depending on the individual. This can include, teeth whitening toothpastes and teeth whitening strips. Using the teeth whitening strips and whitening toothpaste in combination can be very effective as the whitening toothpaste removes the out stains and the teeth whitening strips are able to penetrate deeper into the tooth to remove deeper stains.

2) Professional Teeth Whitening. This type of teeth whitening is definitely more expensive but the teeth whitening results are usually much more effective and achieved in a much faster amount of time. The concentration of the teeth whitening agent is much higher when used by a dentist and therefore will get better results in a shorter period of time.

Teeth Whitening – also known as dental bleaching, is a common procedure in general dentistry but even more so in the field of cosmetic dentistry.

With the national unemployment rate sitting above 8% for the better part of 3 years now, many Americans are either unemployed or under employed. Getting a job with so much competition becomes very difficult even for those with great resumes. But, did you know you can make yourself stand out from the rest of the applicants simply by having whiter teeth?

Studies on teeth whitening have shown that there is a definite boost in self confidence and self esteem as well as how others perceive us. People with whiter teeth, smile more, and definitely have an advantage over those with yellow, stained teeth. Teeth whitening can be an inexpensive investment to to your future.

Types of Teeth Whitening Products

There are several different ways to whiten your teeth. Teeth whitening products and procedures are generally distinguished as,  the in office type (performed by your dentist), at home types, and over the counter whitening.

1) In Office Teeth Whitening. This type of teeth whitening is the most effective but also the most expensive. This procedure is done  in your dentist’s office and usually completed in one hour. It uses a teeth whitening gel that is of higher concentration than the other types and is activated by a special light used by the dentist. In general, a customized impression tray is given to the patient to take home for future whitening touch ups.

2) At Home Teeth Whitening. This type still involves your dentist but is completed at home by the patient. Your dentist will fabricate custom mouth trays for you and give you the trays and teeth whitening gel to take home. This is generally completed over a 1-4 week period wearing the trays a few hours each day or at bedtime each night. You will get similar results as the in office teeth whitening but it will take longer for optimum results. For some, bleaching gel can make their teeth highly sensitive and for others wearing a mouth tray may be uncomfortable.

3) Over the counter Teeth Whitening. These products are readily available in your local drug store and can include teeth whitening strips, teeth whitening toothpastes, paint on gels, and even teeth whitening mouth rinses. This technique is the least effective but is also the cheapest way to gain whiter teeth. It works best on teens and younger adults who do not have the deep staining that develops with age. This process takes longer and usually achieves lesser results than the first two types of teeth whitening.

Process of Teeth Whitening

All of the teeth whitening procedures will whiten teeth,  as all them use the same basic peroxide based products. The main differences are in quality, concentration, and ability to keep the undiluted, activated product in contact with the tooth surface for the duration of the process.

Over time our teeth will build up stains that we are no longer able to remove from brushing alone. These stains will begin to darken our teeth as we age. Teeth whitening works to chemically lift those stains away from your teeth leaving them whiter and brighter. The main ingredient in teeth whitening products is carbamide peroxide. The carbamide peroxide is able to lift and clean out the stains.

The peroxide chemical works by opening up the surface pores of enamel to get into the deeper layers of the teeth, removing inner (intrinsic stains) as well as surface (extrinsic) stains. These surface openings or pores, close and recalcify after about 1 month after cessation of whitening. Once the initial whitening procedure is complete, it is important to give your teeth a break, so that they may remineralize. Constant whitening will cause sensitivity, damage to the teeth nerves, and possible need for root canal therapy. Staining habits tend to continue, so teeth whitening needs to be maintained if you wish to keep that whiter, brighter smile. It is recommended to whiten a for a few days directly after your dental cleaning to keep your teeth their whitest.

Drawbacks to Teeth Whitening

There are some possible side effects from teeth whitening. These include teeth sensitivity and gum tissue irritation. Usually either of these are extremely temporary, but in cases of chronic whitening, permanent nerve damage can occur. If sensitivity occurs, it is recommended to stop, for a day, and be sure to use sensitivity toothpaste. If sensitivity is still a problem you should stop whitening until the symptoms subside. The teeth sensitivity can be treated with a sensitivity toothpaste (like colgate sensitive pro relief) or an application of fluoride in the dental office. Gum irritation is generally caused by getting bleaching product directly on the gums.  This will heal on its own once the irritant is removed (i.e. the carbamide peroxide). You will need to better position your strips, more carefully paint on gel, or if using a tray, use less gel and wipe off any that extrudes past the tray so that it doesn’t sit on the gum tissue and irritate it.

Most kids, will always choose to do the fun activity over the boring one. If the task is not fun it will be rushed through or avoided all together. This can also apply to how well children brush and take care of their teeth. This is one area kids definitely need our guidance to maintain a healthy smile.

The following are four easy ways to encourage your kids to own their smile and at the same time improve their oral health:

1) Make Brushing Fun! - Most dentists recommend brushing for a minimum of two minutes. Two minutes can feel like forever for a kid. To get your child to brush and floss properly, try making Pediatric Dentistrya game out it. Set a timer for two minutes and challenge your child to brush until the timer goes off, or sing twinkle twinkle star twice. Cute, fun toothbrushes are in stores everywhere. Choose one that’s small enough for your child to hold comfortably by his or herself, with a small, rounded head and very soft, polished bristles. I also recommend an electric toothbrush for little ones. Makes it easier to use and makes them feel like big grown ups. Should be replaced every few months, particularly for preschoolers who tend to chew while they brush. For babies, a soft finger toothbrush, or wet washcloth are easiest to use for you and them. Some children’s toothbrushes also have lights that flash or music that plays which serves as a built-in timer. Set the timer again for two minutes for flossing. There are also fun flossers that make it easier to do the best job possible. Another tip would be to brush with your child — Stand side-by-side in front of the bathroom mirror and brush together. Have fun. Let your child mimic your brushing technique. I would also recommend the use of a plaque disclosing solution. This solution will allow you and them to see where the plaque is before brushing and what was missed after brushing. Then you can “help” them remove the last of the plaque. Once the color is gone, the plaque is too!

2) ”But Why??” Explain it all to them – It’s important for kids to know “Why” they are doing things. Brushing and flossing are no different. If they are simply told to do it, it becomes a chore and they will most likely resist. If they realize it’s a good thing for them,  or it is fun, they may be more likely to take the challenge on themselves. Be sure to explain the importance of brushing and flossing in simple terms kids can understand. For example: “Flossing is important because it removes cookies and food left between your teeth. Do you want tooth bugs stuck in between your teeth?” At your child’s next dental checkup, ask your dentist to show visually proper brushing and flossing techniques.

3) Monitor Sweets and Candy – It’s no secret that kids love candy and sweets. But it’s important for kids to know that eating too many sweets causes cavities. Try to keep sugary snacks limited to later in the day to ensure you child brushes away the sugar with his or her evening brushing and flossing regimen. Or if they are going to have sugar at other times make sure they at least rinse but preferably brush as well following the sweets. Also avoid fruit gummies or roll ups these are the worst types of sugar because they lodge between teeth, stick and stay . They are candy not healthy like actual fruit and they are not nutritious.

4) Give kids incentives to achieve – Set a goal with your child to get a “perfect score” the next time he or she has a dental checkup. This, of course, means your dentist finds no cavities! Establish a reward your child will earn for having a perfect checkup, such as that new video game or doll they have been wanting. Make sure they understand that brushing, flossing, and limiting sweets are all ways to reach their goal. You can even tape a photo of the reward to the bathroom mirror for daily reinforcement. Tell yourdentist about the reward system, so he or she can also encourage your child at each checkup. If you are still finding cavities, diet may need to be looked at more closely, and Fluoride may need to be incorporated. Ask your dentist to advise. Remember to schedule your child’s dental checkups every six months. Very important to stay on schedule and go when needed. You are laying the foundation for your child’s oral health throughout life.
