Calcium is an important building block in our diets. The proper amount of calcium results in strong, healthy bones as well as strong teeth. Vitamin D plays a supportive role, and should be understood for it’s important role in helping the body absorb the incoming calcium. Many parents want to know if their child is receiving enough calcium to keep healthy and develop properly. This is especially true for those children who do not like to drink milk (8 ounces contains about 300 mg of calcium).

Guidelines For Calcium Intake

This amount needed varies by the age of the child:

-1 to 3 years old — 700 milligrams daily

-4 to 8 years old — 1000 milligrams

-9 to 18 years old — 1,300 milligrams

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, only one in five children meets even the minimum standards for calcium intake. But most kids ages 9 to 18 do not get the recommended 1,300 milligrams of calcium per day.

Foods To Ingest For Calcium (Besides Milk)

Sometimes a refusal to drink milk is just a matter of taste. A good option is to try to use flavored milks, such as chocolate or strawberry milk (which has less sugar than juice or soda), and drinkable yogurt, which is loaded with calcium. Another good way to make milk taste better are by making milkshakes or healthy smoothies.

-Yogurt (8 ounces contains about 400 mg of calcium)

-Cheese (Think grilled cheese sandwiches, pizza, or lasagna)

-Custard

-Rice Pudding

-Calcium-fortified orange juice

-Calcium-fortified soy milk

-Calcium-fortified breads and cereals

-Beans

-Broccoli

-Spinach

-Tofu

If your child is allergic to milk or is lactose intolerant, you may not be able to use many of the above suggestions to help increase their calcium intake. Luckily, there are many products and supplements available to provide the necessary calcium that your child requires.

-Turkey is high in phosphorous. The phosphorous is not only healthy for developing teeth but can actually help rebuild and re mineralize teeth and bones of the jaw.

-Sweet potatoes are filled with nutrients including vitamins A, C, and B6. Sweet potatoes are thought to be much healthier and nutritious than regular white potatoes as they are digested faster by the body.

-Green and winter vegetables are great sources of vitamins A and C. These vitamins are important for gum health and repair of periodontal diseases (gingivitis and periodontitis).

-Cranberries contain flavonoids. These can prevent bacteria from sticking to teeth and forming plaque. Bacteria (and their acid byproducts) are responsible tooth decay and periodontal disease. Most cranberry side dishes contain high amounts of sugar. Try sweetening with agave, stevia, or splenda.

-Pumpkin pies are loaded with vitamin C and Calcium. Vitamins that are important for gum health and developing teeth and maintenance of bones. Remember, pies have high sugar, so make sure to brush after!

Omega 3 Fatty Acids and Your Health

Eating healthy goes a long way. The dietary choices we make can effect many aspects of our health. The truth is, if we give our bodies what we need, we will benefit with increased energy, higher disease resistance, and increased healing. Keeping our teeth healthy, enables us to eat the nutritious foods our bodies need. Proper nutrition helps us live stronger, healthier lives. Omega 3 fatty acids are extremely important for overall health.

Studies have shown that omega 3 fatty acids found in fish (like salmon) can help keep skin smooth and healthy as well as our teeth and gums. The study was published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that people who consumed more fish over their life tended to have fewer wrinkles than those who ate more red meat products. There was also a link found that showed lower prevalence of periodontal disease in those same subjects. In the study of over 9,000 people, those with diets high in omega 3 were about 25% less likely to develop periodontal disease. It is believed that the Omega 3 fatty acids may help calm down the inflammation caused by oral infections.

You should eat fish a few times each week. Researchers say 2-3 times per week is ideal. The FDA latest dietary guidelines suggest consuming 8 ounces per week to get an average total daily intake of 250 mg. of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), two main types of omega-3s. The following are some of the more popular fish and shellfish as well as their approximate total content of those two fatty acids per 4-ounce portion:

-Salmon (Atlantic, Chinook, Coho): 1,200-2,400 mg.

-Anchovies: 2,300-2,400 mg.

-Bluefin tuna: 1,700 mg; yellowfin tuna: 150-350; canned: 150-300 mg.

-Crab: 200-550 mg.

-Cod: 200 mg.

Eat A Well Balanced Diet including Fruits and Vegetables

Eating a well balanced diet is important for your dental health. If your body is not getting its proper nutrition it can affect your entire immune system. Poor nutrition, increases susceptibility to many common oral disorders, including periodontal disease and tooth decay. Antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts improve your body’s ability to fight bacteria and inflammation. Healthy eating helps to protect your teeth and gum tissues. In addition, crisp fruits and raw vegetables like apples, carrots and celery can actually help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath as well.

Quit Smoking or Using Other Tobacco Products

Using tobacco has been proven to be bad for your dental health as well as your general health. Some of the dental issues associated with smoking include:

-Tooth Discoloration.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, those who use tobacco products, are more likely to maintain poor nutrition. Drinking excessive alcohol also  increases gum recession (periodontal pocketing). Studies show that smokers who regularly drink alcohol are less likely to brush and floss their teeth regularly and are less concerned about their basic health than non smokers.

Brushing and flossing protect your teeth from tooth decay and periodontal disease. These are caused by your teeth’s most persistent enemy, plaque. Both brushing and flossing are equally important for good oral health. Studies have shown that only flossing can remove plaque from between teeth and below the gum line,areas  where tooth decay and periodontal disease begins.

Without proper brushing and flossing, you may develop bleeding gums and gingivitis. Gingivitis is the earliest form of periodontal disease and is reversible. If untreated it will worsen to severely swollen, red, bleeding gums and, eventually, advanced periodontal disease. Periodontal disease has been linked to your general health, therefore, it is doubly important to maintain good dental health at all times.
