simply not the case as many different nutrients and vitamins are needed to maintain bones and teeth. Luckily, most of those nutrients can be found in common everyday foods.

Vitamins Needed For Healthy Teeth

-Calcium – This is the one we all know we need. But did you know that calcium also aids in blood clotting, transmission of nerve impulses, as well as the regulation of your heart’s rhythm. Calcium is an essential nutrient your body needs and if it does not get enough of it, your body will pull it from your bones. Calcium comes from many sources. These include dairy products (milk and cheese), dark leafy greens and even dried beans. Adults up to age 50 should get 1,000 milligrams of calcium and adults over 50 should get 1,200 milligrams of calcium

-Vitamin D – Vitamin D and calcium are partners in building strong bones and teeth. Vitamin D is needed to help your body absorb calcium. Vitamin C deficiencies weaken your bones and teeth, and people with severe vitamin C deficiency often experience tooth loss. Most fruits and vegetables contain vitamin C, so include fresh or frozen produce in every meal to fight vitamin C deficiency.

-Vitamin A - Vitamin A is important for bone growth, cell reproduction and repair. The most common sources for vitamin A are animal products, dairy, and colorful fruits and vegetables.

-Vitamin E - Recent studies have found that individuals with periodontal disease have low levels of vitamin E in their gum tissue. -Milk - There’s a reason milk is the poster child for calcium. Eight ounces of fat-free milk will cost you 90 calories, but provide you with 30% of your daily dose of calcium. Choose a brand fortified with vitamin D to get double the benefits.

-Cheese – Just because cheese is full of calcium doesn’t mean you need to eat it in excess (packing on the pounds won’t help your joints!). Just 1.5 ounces (think a set of dice) of cheddar cheese contains more than 30% of your daily value of calcium, so enjoy in moderation. Most cheeses contain a small amount of vitamin D, but not enough to put a large dent in your daily needs.

-Sardines – These tiny fish, often found in cans, have surprisingly high levels of both vitamin D and calcium. Though they may look a bit odd, they have a savory taste that can be delicious in pastas, salads, and even as topping on pizza.

-Eggs - Though eggs only contain 6% of your daily vitamin D, they’re a quick and easy way to get it. Just don’t opt for egg whites—they may cut calories, but the vitamin D is in the yolk.

-Salmon - Salmon is known for having plenty of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, but a 3-ounce piece of sockeye salmon contains more than 100% of your vitamin D. So eat up for your heart and your bones.

-Spinach - One cup of cooked spinach contains almost 25% of your daily calcium, plus fiber, iron, and vitamin A.

Eat A Well Balanced Diet including Fruits and Vegetables

Eating a well balanced diet is important for your dental health. If your body is not getting its proper nutrition it can affect your entire immune system. Poor nutrition, increases susceptibility to many common oral disorders, including periodontal disease and tooth decay. Antioxidants and other nutrients found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and nuts improve your body’s ability to fight bacteria and inflammation. Healthy eating helps to protect your teeth and gum tissues. In addition, crisp fruits and raw vegetables like apples, carrots and celery can actually help clean plaque from teeth and freshen breath as well.

Quit Smoking or Using Other Tobacco Products

Using tobacco has been proven to be bad for your dental health as well as your general health. Some of the dental issues associated with smoking include:

Periodontal disease has been linked to your general health, therefore, it is doubly important to maintain good dental health at all times.

Pancreatic cancer is a malignancy, originating from transformed cells in tissues forming the pancreas.  Pancreatic cancer is ranked #4 amongst  cancer related deaths today. Difficulty in detection, leads to diagnosis in later stages, resulting in a low cure rate. Pancreatic cancer is responsible for about 40,000 deaths a year in the United States alone. Early diagnosis is key to reducing the mortality rate of pancreatic cancer.  How can your dentist help?

Recent research has uncovered a link between various oral bacteria and pancreatic cancer risk. The research showed that people with high levels of various oral bacteria had double the risk of developing pancreatic cancer. Those with lowered levels of harmless oral bacteria had a reduced risk for pancreatic cancer. This is another piece of evidence showing linkage between the mouth and your general health.

Risk Factors for Pancreatic Cancer

-Family History/Genetics.  Between 5–10% of patients with pancreatic cancer have a family history of pancreatic cancer. The genes have not been identified.

-Age. The risk of developing pancreatic cancer increases with age. Most cases occur after age 60, while cases before age 40 are uncommon.

-Smoking. Cigarette smoking increases your chances of developing pancreatic cancer by a factor of almost 2x normal.

-Diet. People with poor diets are at an increased risk for developing pancreatic cancer. The factors include diets high in red meat, high consumption of sugary drinks, and lacking fruits and vegetables in diet.

-Obesity.

-Diabetes Mellitus.

-Periodontal Disease.

What Did the Study Show regarding Pancreatic Cancer and the Mouth?

The study (published in the journal, Gut) encompassed blood samples from over 800 European adults. The study found that high antibody levels for one or more infectious periodontal bacterium strains of  Porphyromonas gingivalis (bacteria common in periodontal disease ), were associated with a doubling of the risk for pancreatic cancer.

This is a significant finding.

There have been studies in the past, linking  periodontal disease and pancreatic cancer. The Gut research paper is the first to test whether antibodies for oral bacteria are indicators of pancreatic cancer risk. This was also the first study to associate our body’s immune response to commonly found bacteria, with pancreatic cancer risk. The physiological mechanism linking oral bacteria and pancreatic cancer is unclear at this time. The study just reinforces the theory that there is such a mechanism. So while we should not rush out and call this a risk factor it does deserve further study.

Conclusion

Ultimately, further research is needed but it further strengthens the theory that oral health is very important to a person’s overall health and a dentist plays a key role as well. So maintain a healthy mouth through regular dental examinations and professional cleanings, and in turn, you will probably stay a step ahead in your overall health.

A great snack for teeth whitening are crudités (sliced, fresh, raw veggies). Fibrous fruits and vegetables are low in calories, high in nutrients and massage gums and promote blood flow to help keep oral tissues healthy. They also help to increase salivary flow. Good salivary flow is an important key to help protect our oral health.

-Strawberries. This delicious fruit contains an enzyme called malic acid that helps with teeth whitening.

-Eating tart fruits such as oranges and pineapples. These may cause the mouth to produce more saliva, which washes

I am sure most people can rattle off the worst offenders pretty quickly. Tea, coffee, red wine, and sodas. But there are a few foods that might surprise you. They include:

White wine. This can promote staining because it contains tannins and acids that can actually etch tooth surfaces. Alcoholic drinks are generally not acidic unless mixed with acidic beverages in cocktails. These can include drinks such as screwdrivers (vodka and orange juice) or cosmopolitans (vodka with cranberry and lime juice).

Sports drinks. These drinks tend to have a higher acidic content regardless of whether they are regular or sugar free.

Most people won’t give up staining foods. So they must maintain regular visits to the dentist as well as adding the next two to their diet on a regular basis.

Water works to reduce staining. Drink water with meals and rinse your mouth with water after eating. Just sip and give a final swish (and swallow) after a meal.

Sugar-free gum can also help clean teeth. This is helpful when you won’t be able to brush for a while. Xylitol (artificial sweetener) in some sugar-free gums also helps prevent decay by stimulating salivary flow.
