Many of us see a beautiful smile and wish that it could be ours. Few of us are born with perfectly shaped, straight, white teeth. In the past, “natural smiles” were the norm, but today, cosmetic dentistry has evolved to offer many corrective options. This has allowed many patients to take advantage of these modern options to give them that “perfect smile” they have always dreamed about. What about those patients who choose not to go that extra step for that perfect smile?

What Is Snap On Smile?

Snap on smile is a revolutionary solution for many cosmetic dental issues. The beauty of the snap on smile is that it is a totally reversible cosmetic dentistry option. The snap on smile is much more affordable than porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns. In general, the snap on smile procedure costs as much as a single porcelain crown.

Snap on smile is a removable arch of “teeth” which is designed to snap over the existing teeth. The snap on smile removable appliance is made from an extremely strong dental resin. It can be used as a short term or a long term cosmetic dentistry option. The following are the steps involved in the fabrication of a custom snap on smile:

-Dental Impressions. This will include impressions of the teeth, photographs, along with a bite registration. A bite registration allows the dental lab to know the relationship between the upper and lower teeth. At this visit you and your dentist will also pick out the style, shape, and color of your new smile.

-Dental Laboratory. The information gathered by the dentist is then sent off to the dental laboratory. The dental technician will digitally create the custom made snap on smile.

-Snap On Smile Insertion. Following fabrication by the lab technician, your dentist will then place the final product over your teeth. The snap on smile pops right in over your own teeth and fits perfectly.

The snap on smile is so simple to complete without the need for removing any of your natural tooth structure or need to use any anesthesia. The beauty is that it is completely removable at any time with no effect to your natural teeth.

Common Snap On Smile Questions

-Will Snap On Smile Affect My Speech? It usually takes about 2 weeks to get used to the new teeth and speak as yo did before.

-Is It Covered By My Dental Insurance? Snap on smile is considered a cosmetic procedure and is therefore not covered by dental insurance.

-Will It Stain? Your dentist will supply you with special snap on smile cleaning supplies. This kit includes a cleaning solution and an antibacterial gel. Using this kit regularly will help keep your new smile looking like new.

-How Long Does It Take? The entire process can be completed in as little as 3 weeks. The initial appointment (includes photos and impressions) should take 15-20 minutes. The laboratory needs about 2 weeks to complete fabricating your new snap on smile. And the final appointment is a short one ensuring proper fit and comfort.

-Is There A Warranty? There is a 1 year warranty, but an extended warranty can be purchased.

-Can I Cover All Of My Teeth? Upper and lower snap on smiles are available, however most people choose to do the upper only.

-Can I Eat And Drink While Wearing My Snap On Smile? Yes, your new smile is designed to wear during eating and drinking. However, be aware your new smile can stain just like your real teeth if not cleaned properly.

For many adults, braces or orthodontics have just not been an option. They do not want to invest the time and effort to make their teeth straight. For those that do want to correct their occlusion,  it is a worthwhile investment. Orthodontics is a great way to fix bite issues as well as some cosmetic issues. However, if you do not have any bite issues and are looking for a fresh start with a new smile, instant orthodontics may be the answer for you.

How Does Instant Orthodontics Work?

Instant orthodontics is achieved using multiple cosmetic dentistry procedures in a fairly short time to give you the white, bright, straight smile you desire. Depending upon how extreme your smile issues are to begin with, instant orthodontics can range from 2-3 visits to 2-3x times that number. Let’s take a look at some of the cosmetic dentistry procedures involved in instant orthodontics:

-Porcelain Veneers. This is a hallmark procedure in cosmetic dentistry for an instant orthodontics case. Porcelain veneers are a custom made thin shell of porcelain that is bonded to the existing teeth (after a small amount of preparation to the teeth). Once in place you have a long lasting durable dental restoration that can change color, shape, and size of your teeth. These are generally used on the top front teeth and  sometimes, bottom front teeth. Porcelain veneers work best in cases where minor changes need to be made in alignment, shape and color of teeth. Preliminary models of the teeth should be made to assess whether veneers can correct issues properly. If after diagnostic workup, it is found that the issues are too severe, a different method of correction will be necessary. So, porcelain veneers are ideal in cases where there is a limited amount of misalignment of teeth and/or the patient’s desire is to not only bring them back in line but also to change the color and shape of their teeth.

-Porcelain and Zirconia Crowns. These types of crowns are the most cosmetic offered in dentistry today. They are made from modern dental porcelains that range in strength and esthetics. If done properly, no one should ever be able to tell a porcelain crown from natural tooth. Modern porcelains possesses strength, color properties, and light reflection properties that very closely mimic our natural teeth. Porcelain crowns can be used to change bite alignment issues as well as change alignment of front teeth which are more extreme such as those issues that porcelain veneers alone cannot fix. More natural tooth structure needs to be removed in preparing a porcelain crown vs a porcelain veneer.

-Dental Bonding. This cosmetic dentistry procedure can be useful when closing a gap between teeth, changing a surface imperfection, or altering tooth shape. Dental bonding is much less expensive in the short term, but can change color,(stain), and chip requiring frequent replacement. Porcelain crowns or porcelain veneers do not change color and are more resistant to fracture. That said, dental bonding does a great job in closing gaps on teeth as well as changing the size, shape and color of one or more teeth much in the same circumstances diagnostically as veneers.

Why Choose Instant Orthodontics Over Traditional Orthodontics?

While traditional orthodontics has a necessary and important place in dentistry. Traditional orthodontic movement of teeth into correct anatomical position is the generally the more conservative approach due to the fact that the teeth do not require alteration to their anatomy. Many adult patients choose instant orthodontics over traditional orthodontics for the following reasons:

-Time. Traditional orthodontics can take a year or longer to achieve the results you are looking for. Orthodontics will not whiten teeth or change color or tooth shape.

-Periodontal disease. This needs to be under control prior to any type of dental work of this magnitude. Traditional orthodontics can make a situation where there is bone loss present even worse as the teeth move. Teeth moving into place may cause increased bone loss, tooth looseness, root resorption, and gum tissue recession.

-Tooth Decay/Old restorations present. When there is tooth decay present or an older dental restoration (such as a crown or previous dental bonding) that needs replacing, it may actually be easier and more cost efficient for the patient to get new dental restorations and re align the teeth in that manner.

-Bite Reclamation. Over time, our teeth wear (this is especially true for those who grind their teeth). This wear can cause a loss in what is called vertical dimension, collapsing our bites. A good cosmetic dentist can not only make your new restorations look perfect but they can also add the extra function of restoring that lost vertical height. This will give the effect of smoothing out the skin and wrinkles around the mouth thus giving you a more youthful appearance. Instant orthodontics can not fix loss of tooth structure.

Instant Orthodontics Conclusion

Instant orthodontics is not for everyone. For those who are unhappy with their smile and looking for more than just teeth whitening it could be just the answer for their needs. If traditional orthodontics is not feasible for you, instant orthodontics may be a great option. You can expect your smile to look great in just a few weeks,  but be aware, over time some of those restorations may need to be redone if they break or tooth decay becomes an issue. Remember, dental hygiene is the foundation of any cosmetic dentistry work. If you wish any restoration to last, you must brush, floss, rinse, and see your dentist regularly for examinations and professional cleanings.

Most of us strive to be successful in life whether it be at work, with financial success, climbing the social ladder, finding love, etc. For many, it takes hard work, for others it might be a stroke of luck that got them to the top. Many of us overlook appearances while attempting to gain success. Recent studies were done by Time magazine, looking at the top 100 most influential people. What they discovered was, they all had very similar, consistent, facial and smile features.

Striking Similarities

The study showed striking facial similarities between these people regardless of occupation or gender. The researchers believe these common features may play a role in the expressions of influential faces. They also found that people’s smiles play a huge role in how others perceive them. Any good cosmetic dentist will tell you that the perfect smile is one that achieves the right balance of aesthetics (color, shape, and size), form, and function. Previous research confirms that a person’s smile has a huge influence on how others perceive you.

The research team examined closely the photos of the most influential people in the world. They used 36 variables for each photo to “score” each one in relation to each other and the rest of the population. These variables were broken down as follows:

-Smile-to-face proportions

-Smile proportions

-Dental proportions

-Facial and Dental Symmetries

-Other qualities relating to the smile that included tooth shape and color

It is not only important that your teeth are straight and white, but also that they are in proportion to each other and to the rest of your face, and are symmetrical.

How To Make Your Smile More Influential?

Cosmetic dentistry has really developed into an art form. Many dentists call themselves “cosmetic dentists” but few have the skill, experience, and knowledge to make a smile makeover look natural. Important to remember any cosmetic dental work should always look as natural as possible. This includes using the right materials for the job. Common cosmetic dentistry procedures include:

-Dental BondingDental bonding is the cosmetic dentistry procedure in which tooth colored dental materials are bonded to a tooth. This might be one of the easiest cosmetic dentistry procedures to change our look. Using dental bonding we can change shape, size, color, length, and close any spaces that might be present. Dental bonding is generally completed in the dentist office in as little as an hour. The main drawbacks of dental bonding are chipping, wearing, and staining. The final product is not as strong as a porcelain restoration and may need to be updated over time, but can be done in less time for less money. While dental bonding is also used to restore teeth damaged by tooth decay it can also be used as a cosmetic veneer. This procedure can easily alter your smile in as little as an hour, and is minimally invasive. Dental bonding is a very easy way to make your smile youthful and natural in appearance.

-Porcelain Veneers and Porcelain Crowns. Often called “instant orthodontics”, porcelain veneers can change the alignment of teeth, if the alignment issues are not too extreme. Porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns can be a great way to replace lost tooth structure and alter imperfect teeth creating a more youthful appearance. Porcelain crowns and porcelain veneers tend to require more than one visit, but the results will give you a beautiful, youthful smile that lasts for years to come. Porcelain Veneers are custom made, ultra thin, tooth colored shells that are bonded to your teeth, and do not change color over time. This allows the cosmetic dentist to not only alter color of your teeth, but shape and length as well. Porcelain crowns can be used on teeth that either already have crowns or need more extensive work (having large restorations or tooth decay). Both porcelain veneers and porcelain crowns can as used in cosmetic dentistry to give the patient a flawless, more youthful and natural looking smile.

-Teeth Whitening. This is quite possibly the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedure today. It is safe and effective and comes in a few forms. These forms include in office whitening, at home whitening (with dentist provided trays), as well as use of teeth whitening strips, and topical gels. All of these methods are quite effective for most people. It has been proven by research time and again, that people find a whiter smile to be more youthful and attractive.  People tend to feel better about themselves when they are happy with their appearance. Teeth whitening can give patients a dramatic change to their smile with minimal cost and time invested.

-Teeth Contouring. This might be one of the simplest and most cost effective cosmetic dentistry procedures of all. It is usually done without the need for anesthesia and can be as simple as filing down a tooth that appears longer or is slightly out of alignment with the others. Most patients are quite surprised at how such a small adjustment can alter their smile for the better.

-Gum contouring and Gum grafting. Evening out gum levels can help teeth to look more evenly sized and can make short teeth appear longer. Gum grafts can fix areas where gum recession has occurred to make everything appear even and natural again.

-Dental ImplantsDental implants allow cosmetic dentists another option in tooth replacement to recreate a youthful, attractive smile. Whether it is a single tooth or a full mouth restoration, dental implants can fill that need. Missing teeth or open spaces has long been considered a sign of old age. Having a full set of white teeth screams youth especially when they are bright, white, and sparkling. When a person is missing a tooth they have several options. There are partial and complete dentures (including the all on 4 dental implants system), traditional bridges, and dental implants. A dental implant can look and feel just like a natural tooth. It is also easier to keep clean than a traditional bridge. Dental implants are placed directly into bone creating a solid foundation for a natural tooth replacement.

-Bite Reclamation. Over time as we age, we tend to lose some height on our teeth. This loss of height of height is also referred to as loss of vertical dimension. Some other factors that cause this loss include acid reflux or teeth grinding (bruxism). Reclaiming a person’s bite utilizing dental implants and porcelain crowns will increase vertical height which will also remove some of the wrinkles around the mouth. These wrinkles develop as our we age and our mouth’s sag from this loss of dimension. Cosmetic dentistry can fix some of this.

-Botox and Dermal Fillers. Long the realm of cosmetic surgeons, dentistry has now added these procedures to give what is called a dental face lift. In combination with dental work, removing some of those wrinkles on the face and around the mouth specifically will better frame that beautiful, white, youthful smile.

Conclusion

The main takeaway is a balanced smile is the most influential one. Sometimes the job of a cosmetic dentist is finding the right balance between a patients wants and what would look best in the end. Cosmetic dentistry can transform an ordinary smile into a flawless one but need the skill and knowledge of a good cosmetic dentist to achieve this goal.
