Botox Vs Juvederm Differences
Botox (or botox cosmetic) is a safe form of botulinum toxin A. This neurotoxin causes botulism. Once injected, botox cosmetic will paralyze the facial muscles in that area temporarily. This will prevent the muscles from creating deep wrinkles, crow’s feet around the eyes, or frown lines. Wrinkles occur in 3 different ways:
-lack of collagen in skin.
-changes at cellular level as we age.
-environmental changes like exposure to the sun.
Botox actually has many uses beyond a cosmetic one. These can include:
-treatment for excessive sweating.
-treatment of teeth clenching.
-treatment for overactive bladder.
-Temperomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorder.
How Is A Botox Procedure Completed?
The botox cosmetic treatment is very quick and easy. It can be completed in as little as a few minutes and does not require anesthesia (but can use numbing cream or ice packs to lessen discomfort). An extremely fine needle is used to inject the botox cosmetic into the specific muscles. There will be slight discomfort from the botox injection. Most patients report it takes about a week for the full effects of the Botox cosmetic to take hold. The effects will last about 3-4 months. The lines will gradually return but with repeated treatments the muscles will start to train and wrinkles will be lessened. Temporary bruising in the area of injection is the most common side effect of botox cosmetic.
Juvederm is an FDA approved non surgical, minimally invasive dermal filler that is created with a synthetic hyaluronic acid (also called HA). Hyaluronic acid is a substance that is natural to our bodies, and it helps keep your skin healthy in a few ways:
-Maintaining moisture by hydrating our skin
-Softening our skin
-Volumizing our skin
How Is A Juvederm Procedure Completed?
What Could I Expect from a Procedure?
Juvederm is a non-surgical, minimally invasive treatment performed right in our office. Juvederm is an injectable treatment that has the ability to reduce the appearance of unwanted lines and wrinkles. It is able to achieve this by restoring lost volume to the skin and lips. Juvederm (also called wrinkle fillers) can also be used as “volumizers,” plumping and lifting cheeks, chins, jawlines, and temples, and filling out thin lips. The injection is similar to Botox cosmetic but Juvederm contains a local anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort. As a dentist we have the ability to numb your mouth area to reduce pain and discomfort further. Juvederm provides results up to a year. Side effects are rare but can include redness, swelling, and bruising at the injection site. Results from Juvederm can be seen almost immediately.
Botox Vs Juvederm – Which One Is Right For Me?
Botox Vs Juvederm is not the question as both can work side by side. Botox has the ability to make wrinkles disappear around the eyes, forehead, lengthening upper lip to remove gummy smile, and vertical lines around lips. Juvederm removes wrinkles in a different way by adding volume (dermal filler) to fill the lines from the nose to the lip, the lower face, outline the lips, and to fill the lips. There is no reason for a choice between botox vs juvederm as they do separate things. Juvederm is perfect for wrinkles that are present when your face is resting, whereas Botox is perfect for wrinkles that appear upon movement. Your dentist will be able to go into greater detail on what would be the right treatment for you based on your cosmetic appearance and your desires for treatment.
